First I wanted to say thank you to everyone who has joined and/or contributed to this group. We are now beyond 100 members, after just our first month! And now I would like to begin a series of fun journal entries for curiosity, educational, and inspirational aims... with links to pretty pictures! Our first installment:
ANCIENT GREEK GODDESSESHera The highest ranking of female deities in the Greek Pantheon, Hera is married to Zeus, the king of the gods. She is the goddess of marriage, and the patroness of all women. She is known for her vengeful disapproval of Zeus’ constant philandering. Her Roman name is Juno.
[link] [link]Athena The goddess of wisdom and war. One of the most powerful of Greek deities, she was born by springing forth from the head of Zeus. She is portrayed as a warrior with armor and a shield. Her association with war is that of protection, not senseless violence. Her Roman name is Minerva.
[link] [link]Artemis The goddess of the hunt, and of wilderness and wild animals. She is sometimes perceived as a warrior goddess, due to her athletic lifestyle and her skills with a bow and arrow, although she is more of a hunter than a fighter. She is also a moon goddess. Her Roman name is Diana.
[link] [link] Aphrodite The goddess of love and sexuality. She is also the most beautiful of all the deities, and Zeus was said to be intimidated by her beauty. Also an ocean goddess, she was born already an adult at the bottom of the sea. Her Roman name is Venus. She is the mother of Eros, a.k.a. Cupid.
[link] [link] [link] Demeter The goddess of vegetation and seasonality. She is especially associated with crops and agriculture. She is the mother of Persephone, who spends half the year in the Underworld. Demeter's mourning over this is what causes seasonal changes. Her Roman name is Ceres.
[link] [link] Hestia Goddess of the hearth. As such, she is associated with fire. Tending the fireplace, she is also a goddess of the home, although she is not a housewife, but a young maiden. The hearth was a sacred symbol of social order to the Greeks and Romans. Hestia's Roman name is Vesta.
[link] [link]Gaia Goddess of the Earth, and the Mother of the Greek gods. She is also associated with prophecy, as the visions at the Delphic Oracle were believed to have come from her. Gaia has become very popular in modern times, often regarded as Mother Earth herself. Her Roman name is Terra.
[link] [link] Hecate Goddess of magic and witchcraft, and also crossroads. She is often portrayed in triplicate, and is symbolized by the three phases of the moon (waxing, full, and waning). She is therefore also a moon goddess, and the goddess of the menstrual cycle. Her Roman name is Trivia.
